Why were tarot cards invented?
For a card game — that's the plain documented answer. Northern Italian nobility of the 1440s added illustrated trump cards (trionfi) to the standard four-suit deck, creating tarocchi. Fortune-telling was layered on later, in 1780s Paris, by occultists re-reading the game's images. The 'ancient oracle' story is romantic; the 'Milanese party game' story is true.
