Tarot cards first appear in Italian records from the 1460s–1470s as the game 'tarocchi', produced for Milanese nobility (the Visconti-Sforza decks are the surviving gems). The fortune-telling layer was grafted on in 1780s France by Etteilla and friends. So: cards in the 1400s, divination in the 1780s — a 300-year gap most 'ancient mystery' marketing skips.
